As soon as most folks find out that I often fly as a standby passenger, they often love to learn more!
Some FAQ’s include: How do I fly standby? How does it work? How much does it cost? What’s the coolest place I’ve ever visited? And so much more!
I don’t mind the questions at all, since I’d absolutely have the same curiosity myself if the roles were reversed! I certainly understand the mystique!
“How do you fly standby?:” I am very lucky to receive the ability to fly standby from my best friend, Rachel, who is a flight attendant for one of our largest US carriers.
“Can I fly standby?:” Typically, the only way to be able to fly standby is to either be an airline employee, or to be granted standby benefits from an employee you’re very close with. The exception would be if you have a certain level of status with an airline, and that particular airline waives its ticket change fees if you decide to jump on an earlier or later plane.
With those “how” questions answered, the above travel day vlog peels back the curtain to show you some answers to the logistical questions you may still have about how it works.
Specifically, when my husband Derek recently had to fly to London for business, I was able to join him for the week by flying standby, where I decided to film my process throughout the day. On that day, I flew from Chicago to London with a long layover in Detroit.
AND the best part was that I was even able to get a first-class seat for the redeye part of the journey! (TOTAL SCORE!) Trust me: it’s not always a first-class experience, haha! You guys and the camera must have brought some good luck.
Can’t wait to have you along for the ride!
