Say cheese!
One of the coolest stats I ever heard about photography was that every minute, humankind takes more photos than ever existed 150 years ago. In 2017, the total number of annual photos taken surpassed 1 trillion for the first time!
Vacation photos are no exception, with everyone documenting their leisure time at record speed! (Or record clicks?)
These days, with travel photos being shared to social media by everyone and their grandmothers, it feels important that yours will stand out from the crowd. Many travelers yearn for their vacation photos to be the most beautiful – and enviable. You want people to know you had a great vacation because your photos show it!
In recent years, many people have started to notice that the higher quality the camera, the more likes a photo many receive.
However, it is important to note that smartphone cameras have come a very long way in recent years.
In today’s video, I first review the pro’s and con’s of bringing your DSLR (or mirrorless) camera vs. just your smartphone on your trip. Then, I discuss why I’ve exclusively shot my photos and video with my iPhone X during my travels over the past year. Lastly, I round out the conversation by providing the points to consider when choosing the right camera option for you.
If you can’t watch the video (you’re at work? your sound is broken?), I’ve included a summary below of the points to consider:
DSLR/mirrorless Pro’s:
- Highest quality photos
- Can be edited and enlarged easily
- Best zoom capabilities – especially with varying lenses
- Can take action photos in crowded places (good shutter speeds)
- Auto-focus is better for videos
DSLR/mirrorless Con’s:
- Heavy & bulky
- Often requires lots of gear beyond just the camera
- Audio quality for shooting video is often bad
- Expensive
- Not as easy to share photos and video to social media
Smartphone Pro’s:
- You likely already have one!
- It’s pocket-sized and lightweight (very portable)
- Many of the latest models can shoot 4K video
- Can share easily to social media
- Has front and back cameras, so you can take selfies much easier
Smartphone Con’s:
- Lower quality images
- Auto-focus is not good when shooting videos
- Limited zoom capabilities

Questions to Consider When Making Your Travel Camera Decision:
- What is your budget? Would the money you spend on a camera be better spent on activities during your vacation?
- How much walking around will you be doing? Will lugging gear be an issue?
- Do you already know how to use the functions on your camera? If not, do you have enough time to learn before you leave?
- Will you be disappointed if you cannot share your photos instantly to social media?
Hope this video and blog post help you make the best decision on which camera to bring on your next trip based on your needs! That said, make sure to remember to have fun, too! I highly recommend putting down the viewfinder and phone every once in a while to truly experience the remarkable destination that you chose. The world is a beautiful place filled with fascinating people, and building new connections through conversation can help broaden your mind and fill your heart.
Happy Travels!
